If you have a working copy, check which libs its using.
possible you are picking up an older lib that is no longer compatible 
with update

 >  ldd `which gimp`

compare the list of libs to the machine thats working
see if there are any differences

I had some issues a while ago with another app -
problem was older 32bit libs were being picked up over 64bit libs

This may lead to checking your /etc/ld.so.conf file
to see the search order of the libs
