Hello,
I use gpsbable almost daily, it works for me, but I built it from
source on debian ( compiled out of the box no probs ) ...

You need to specify garmin/usb as the input/format. For output I
use GPX to save my files. ( NB do not place the unit in USB storage
mode, when using gpsbable it wont work )

# EG place tracks , routes and waypoints into a GPX file
*|gpsbabel -r -t -w -i garmin -f usb: -o gpx -F output.gpx
|*
# or replace -r -t -w with -T to do live tracking

If you get any errors please post them, I will help if I can

Good luck
Hroth
