I didn't have any /dev/ttyUSB devices, I think that's the other way of configuring it, which I've just tried and it works. Ubuntu blacklists the garmin_gps kernel module and recommends using the usb: option, but doing 'modprobe garmin_gps' and then using your command line seems to work. I'd still like to know why the usb: option doesn't work, but for now I have something that does work at least.
