Hi David,

Way back i had done the same at our work and setup a Jabber server on
an old Pentium. We were about 25 people using it with Pidgin client
(different name at the time).

The new version today is jabberd 2.x , it seems to have changed alor
and evolved since i last used it.

Id say you have nothing to loose trying out jabberd with pidgin client
for all your desktops.
