Hi,
I am no master here, and I assume my typical requirements are not very
similar to yours. However, my toys are netcat, tcpdump, nmap, ping -R and
traceroute.

My typical test is to first see what speed I can get and on what ports.
While doing that I am sampling/logging with tcpdump, looking for ugly data. I
also will run an nmap scan to see if that gives any indication of issues.

Sometimes I have resorted to using one of the following.
        wireshark, eathereal, EtherApe
less related
ganglia and vnstat are also good if you want to see time related issues

I hope that these aren't all old tools :)
Gluck!
