I just set up a friend of mine's new PC from scratch dual-booting Win7
+ Ubuntu.  He has an Alesis 12 channel mixer w/USB that worked right
out of the box which he used for his main in& out as he also does
music recording.  You can get full-on mixers for ~ $150.  Overkill?
Well... you never said what you wanted to do specifically ;)
