I have been looking for something that is external USB audio. I have tried 4 or 5 and finally have something that works with no futzing around, plus you can actually buy it :)

I am not a big fan of creative, but here it is: Creative X-FI HD. http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Sound-Blaster-System-SB1240/dp/B004275EO4/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt

No I don't work for them :)

Works out of the box in newest ubuntu. It has optical out (ie it is a DAC), but I have yet to really test that (if someone has this device and has optical working, let me know). The volume control on the unit controls the master volume in gnome. Sound quality is great, and no electrical interference from the motherboard (I have been trying to get rid of buzzing from crappy onboard sound card).

Anyways, always looking for good linux-ready devices. Post 'em if you know of something good out there.

Jeremy
