For small stuff a normal VPS is more cost-effective I think. You can
still hook it to S3 and have unlimited storage.
You can find 2GB RAM VPS for about $20/mo if you look around.

Not to mention, you don't have to worry about reconfiguration after
every reboot, changing ips, and, and, and...
There are ways around some of these issues, if you're willing to pay.
As Jeremy stated, a VPS is usually an more cost efficient solution if
you're looking to host 24/7. Renting bare metal is expensive, but it
depends on your task.
