AFAIK, Unity uses X like most/all other GNU/Linux GUIs do.
The only significant GUI I know which doesn't use X yet runs on top of
Linux is Android's GUI (there are some others, but less well known,
which run for example directly on top of the framebuffer, such as
QtMoko).
