That's strange. For the BIOS to show up you doesn't even need to have
a hard drive in your computer. Hard to believe that it' s a hard drive
related problem. You can't even start your SETUP BIOS when the problem
happens?
No. It just hangs on a black screen, no beeps or anything. It's the
same behaviour that I've seen on a defective motherboard. You start it
up, but nothing happens beside the fans whirling in the case and a few
lights. I've never seen a hard disk cause this type of problem before.
I don't get it. It's why I automatically assumed that my hard disk was
defective and bought a new one. But both are working just fine after
wiping the partitions using the USB enclosure trick.
I'll have to run a few more tests to reproduce the problem. I have a
spare drive to do so now.
Check the power supply. Possible you may be overloading, or there is a
short. Most fans use 5v, maybe not enough juice for 12v supply to bring
up the mb. Try removing any components, including RAM, if you can start
with one bank, and swap if you can. Try booting with the setup
disk/live DVD or USB, without any drives. Sometimes controller goes
bad, even USB ports, I had the back panel USB go bad, disabling in BIOS
worked, just had the front panel working (sucked for KB/mouse). Do the
LEDs on the KB light up when system turns on?
