Mystery solved!

I was sure I hadn't 'misremembered'. When I initially tried anki I
installed from the Ubuntu repository. This is version 0.9.9.4-1. I've
just reinstalled it now to try it and short-cut keys do not work. I
then installed from the .DEB that's downloadable from the anki website
and the shortcut keys work fine.
