Since the dvi file looks OK, it seems that part of the chain works ok too. If
you display the png file in an image viewer, does it look ok too?
Strange that it seems to work with <$$> tags instead of <$>, but I guess that
would take a real latex expert to figure it out.
But good to know that you can get it to work now!
