Ok, I emptied the latex directory, then opened Mnemosyne and created a
card like this:

Q: The sign for copyright is...?
A: <$>\copyright</$>

This is what I initially got:
- The card & png file showed a bold, italicized C instead of the (c)
sign.
- The tmp.dvi file showed the correct (c) sign....

I re-did the operation several times and now for some reason it works
for \copyright and for the single $-bracketed x^2+y^2=z^2.

However, it still doesn't work for the \mathbb and \varmath cards ("<$>
\varmathbb{ABC}</$>" and "<$>\mathbb{B}</$>"). Weird.
