I confirmed that the VLC player can take the name of an MP3 file and play it.

I changed directory to:
C:\Charles\.mnemosyne\sounds\ancient greek\pronounciation>

then ran the command
> "C:/program files/videolan/vlc/vlc.exe" alpha.mp3

The VLC player program started and played the sound.

VLC does the same thing.   Calling up a program like VLC or Winamp
is inefficient.
