Based on your needs, wouldn't it be simpler to just add cards through
Mnemosyne's normal Add a Card dialog? The text formats only offer ease of
entering in a large number of cards with the same properties, or importing
them from some external source, neither one of which seem to apply to your
situation. If you really want to use XML, someone else on the list might be
able to chime in, or a simple Google search for "free xml editor" or
"open-source xml editor" would probably turn up some helpful options. If
that's the case, just ignore the rest of this email. :)

You can navigate the window using the Tab and Shift-Tab keys, and (at least
on Linux, not sure about Win/Mac) assign a grade and add the card using
Ctrl-<number of grade>.

So, I could add two Spanish vocab cards at grade 2 with the following (in
the Add a Card dialog, [key] means that I hit that key):
[Shift-Tab]Spanish[Tab]notebook[Tab]el cuaderno[Ctrl-2]jaw[Tab]la
quijada[Ctrl-2]

Then change to a different category, and add another card at grade 0:
[Shift-Tab]Python[Tab]What is the function for substituting text using
regexes?[Tab]re.sub(pattern, repl, string, count = 0)[Ctrl-0]

Hope this helps and isn't too verbose,
