Many cards in my library have been shown to me just once if not never,

For the unseen cards, they indeed show a negative value. That's a
'beauty wart' and will not affect the scheduling.

For the rest of your question, Mnemosyne is not a silver bullet for
memorisation. If you want to learn 2500 words, it is going to take
some time. My advise is to take it slowly and find a pace you are
comfortable with. Don't learn too many new cards a day, perhaps 10 or
20. If you feel you need to spend all of your time reviewing cards you
learned earlier as opposed to learning new cards, that's a sure sign
you've been pushing yourself too hard.

A technique I've been using lately is this: I pick a number of cards I want to do the next day (this number is larger, typically, than the number of scheduled cards). For me this # is 60, but everyone will have their own based on how many total cards they have (I have about 1300), time availability, etc.

I do my scheduled cards, then check the Ctrl-T screen (statistics) to see how many are for the next day. I let mnemosyne throw me new cards and recently "forgotten" cards as it will and I check the stats screen every so often until my next day's card # is that magic 60. This keeps me getting around 3-5 not-yet-seen cards a day; sometimes more, sometimes none. It's a pace I can keep up with, it doesn't take overly long during my morning routine, and it keeps things fresh by showing me new stuff fairly frequently.

That said, the one really irritating piece of this is that the stats screen is MODAL, and for no reason I can surmise. So I can't just leave it up and have it update while I do cards; I have to open it, check the #, close it, do cards, repeat. Peter, is there any way to change that in future versions?
