Thanks for the replies. It seems most people use specific software
then rather than a "customised" approach as such.

Some sort of wiki is something I've been meaning to set up for a
while. I haven't got any web space right now though and I can't
imagine setting up a server on my desktop is an option due to it's
incredible cruddiness and general lack of performance. As it is I'm
effectively forced to abandon multi-tasking or at least resort to a
Firefox + 1 policy: Firefox and one other program open at the same
time max.

I'll have to take another look at mind map software, I had mess about
with them before, but couldn't really get the point. My ideas don't
come in nice simple one or two word "concepts", but sometimes are one
sentence questions, sometimes a whole page of ranting and ravings,
sometimes a list of bullet points. I guess I'm supposed to turn this
text into mind maps, and that process actually helps organise the
thoughts themselves?

The tagging aspect of Evernote seems more what I'm looking for, I had
a peek at their website, but only managed to get 30 seconds through
the introductory video ( http://www.evernote.com/about/video/#OlOLXWvaIy0|1|1
) before I wanted to repeatedly punch my fist through the computer
screen. I won't let that put me off but I'm on linux too, and am also
very paranoid with sticking personal stuff on other people's servers.
It's one thing having your search history accidently made available as
a searchable database on pirate bay, but the notion of every idea and
thought you've ever written down being published on 4chan by some 14yr
hacker, is ... well, not very nice.

I wonder if there isn't some file management software with tagging, a
search program which I could just use on one set of folders full of
the .txt files. The lighter weight the better.
