I've rarely used mnemonics when learning in Mnemosyne though, because I worried that it might circumvent the process of getting things into my long-term memory (i.e. when I have to use a mnemonic to recall an item, is it cheating? Or does it reinforce the "correct" pathway to the item?). I suppose some experiments are in order!

That's a really interesting point. I suspect I have been subconsciously thinking about this but you have articulated it rather well. I find mnemonics are useful for learning initially and for spelling botanical latin, but in the long-term it sometimes 'gets in the way'. I'm probably not going to explain it very well but items I've learned non-mnemonically (so to speak) are 'easier' in the long term than items where I've used mnemonics in some way. For example, I have a card for botanical latin that is:

Latin:
    Acanthosoma haemorrhoidale

Common:
    Hawthorn Shieldbug

This was a tricky one to learn and I couldn't readily think of any mnemonics in the latin to act as hooks so I just let it repeat and repeat and wash over me until gradually it stuck. Did it eventually go into long-term memory without hanging around much in short-term memory?
