Hello Peter and all,
I'm using Mnemosyne to learn Mandarin Chinese. I recently changed my
category names from English to their Chinese equivalents (eg. from
"Geography" to "地理").
Now I'm noticing weird sorting behavior. Category names in English sort
alphabetically as expected. Category names in Chinese do not sort
consistently. In the Edit Cards and the Activate Categories windows it works
great. Characters sort alphabetically according to pinyin. Example: 汉
("han") goes before 里 (pronounced "li") which goes before 马 ("ma"). This way
of sorting Chinese characters is the most commonly used today. It's used for
tasks in most operating systems, Modern dictionaries, etc.
In the Add Cards dialog box and the Categories tab of the Statistics window,
however, categories are sorted according to character radical without regard
to pronunciation. So now 妈 ("ma") appears next to 妓 ("ji") but far from 马
("ma"). This kind of sorting is impractical for long lists of Chinese
characters. There are over 200 character radicals whose order has to be
memorized for readers to efficiently sort this way. Plus, it's inconsistent
with alphabetic sorting already in use in Mnemosyne.
Is it possible to take a look at this for Mnemosyne 2.x?
On a related note, the Add Card dialog box supports auto-fill for categories
in English but not in Chinese. For example. If I have cards with the
category "murrayjames" and I type "m" in the Category field of the Add Card
dialog box, Mnemosyne will recommend "murrayjames". With Chinese category
names this never happens. (I'm not sure about Arabic and other non-Latin
languages.) Would this be a hard feature to add for other languages in
Mnemosyne 2.x?
Cheers,
--murrayjames
