The Status Of Model Glue 3: Gesture
Summary
Model Glue 3 (MG3) has been under development since Early 2008. The product
first debuted at CFObjective 08 and listed a number of productivity
improvements and an event driven core to the existing Model Glue platform.
During 2008, MG3 was improved and the focus was on testing the product under
varying conditions for performance and to uncover any bugs. All known bugs
are currently fixed and checked into the bleeding edge. MG:3 is currently
used in production applications and runs as expected.
We'll follow a typical release for MG3. This means there will be a public
beta, a Release Candidate and a Final Release. At this time, we do not have
a fixed date set and favor quality over artificial timelines.
That said, I realize many folks want to start using MG3 and are waiting
until the project has some official milestone before getting involved. This
makes sense and I've been in the same place before. There are a few things
that must take place before we can make an official Beta release.
Communications:
Since the framework team owes a clear line of communication to the userbase,
I'm going to schedule bi-weekly appointments for myself to draft updates to
this plan. We are under some growing pains right now and we'll begin
improving our optima.
Steps Before Beta
The next step in the release schedule is to release an official beta. 3
Major tasks will be completed before the release.
1) Scaffolding
MG3 has no scaffolding engine in it. There was discussion about removing
it for MG3 but this would break backwards compatibility. We've not yet come
to a conclusion of whether to just port the Scaffolding engine from MG2, or
to work on a new and improved Scaffolding engine. There are some highly
qualified folks offering to take this on.
2) Documentation
The documentation for MG3 is non-existant. Some cursory documentation
exists for the new features. Normally, we would simply edit the MG2
documentation with the new MG3 features. Practically, the source docs for
MG2 are AWOL and this necessitates a complete documentation rewrite. As
expected, no one really wants to take this on. There was an offer from Rick
Stone - RoboHelp ACE that might be of help. I'm due to follow up with him.
(see the Friday Puzzler:

3) Example Applications
We want to ship the product with several example applications. I have
some I'll submit and others on the team will contribute as well.
Timeline For Beta
Ideally, we'd have something ready for a beta by CFObjective. Certainly an
achievable goal, given a few volunteers. I have no problem writing the
documentation for the new MG3 features but I have to admit, I'm not too keen
on manually bringing over the MG2 documentation. I still have a gimmer of
hope (or maybe procrastination) that the source documentation can be
preserved.
If folks are interested in working towards the CFObjective release goal,
please contact me off list with your information and which of the 3 areas
you want to help in.
