   Most of the pertinent ones are from outside the US (in my opinion).
Something about civil wars, over-bearing governments, and revolution seems to
breed great writing. I can't remember who said it, nor how he said it, but
someone (laugh) once said: The US will never have good writers until someone
makes it illegal for them to write. (Presumably under penalty of death.) 

Proof? We have no Kundera, Marquez, Hamsun, Celine, Hrabal...

But we do have Vollmann!
