Originality wasn't at question, we have many original writers. What was at
question was: How many will be relevant in 200 years? And, I think, we are
based on tradition & timelessness, why else would he have the same canon (i.e.
Dead White Males) crammed down our throats throughout the generations? 

I don't know. I'd say we've had (have) some damn fine American writers, I was
probably generalizing & being overly cynical (what with the holidays and all).
Besides, I mentioned Vollmann, right?
