Have you seen the perl-widget project at http://www.officevision.com/pub/Widget/? It was (is) designed to handle the problem of creating widgets that are self-aware (knowing how to display themselves in a number of formats, knowing how to update their data source, etc). The last time I took a look at the code was a few months ago, and it was well on its way at that point. The project is hosted by sourceforge, so is a mailing list and CVS access.
