You and Michael know I read these things. What are you trying to do to my
lack of self esteem? You guys keep it up and there won't be a second Pills'
record! And Yeah, Boston is really the greatest. We have such a great history
of art and literature here (among other things). I can walk right out my door
and walk 3 blocks to e.e. cummings' house and then either turn right at
Harvard Sq. to get to Longfellow's beautiful yellow manse, or take the T to
Beacon Hill and see the little flat where Sylvia Plath lived when she first
married Ted Hughes. I can go have a drink in the bar at the Ritz-where Sylvia
and Anne Sexton used to drink after their poetry class at BU adult ed.
Apparently they used to park in the loading zone with impunity as they had
every intention of getting loaded. I can visit the gross alley where Edgar
Allen Poe was born. I can walk over to the church in the South End that was
the original sight of the Tea Party concert hall. A friend of mine who drives
a city bus told me he saw the Jeff Beck Group there and Rod Stewart sat down
at his table during one of the longer guitar solos. Or I can go to the
Orpheum like I did tonight and see a concert in such a wonderful acoustic
environment that Elvis Costello can have them turn off the PA and do the last
song totally unamplified. And I got to have my picture taken with him
afterwards-which has nothing to do with Boston, but that's where it happened!
And finally, we've got the rock here in Boston. Why, if one were of the mind
to, one could go to TT the Bear's place tomorrow night to watch us, the Damn
Personals and the Shods. There is none more rock available without a
prescription.
