As with most musical terms this can of course be a matter of
perspective. However, I think in this case (since you're trying to find
out about soul instrumentals) a more appropriate question would be "What
is the definition of soul music?". To a first approximation, you could
do a lot worse than answering "It's what Booker T & the MG's play, but
usually with a singer".
