Because Paul, it's not jazz. You could call it blues (Green Onions is a
pretty straight blues progression), you could certainly call it r'n'b, but
it's definitely not jazz. Jimmy Smith definitely is jazz. A lot of 'hammond
jazz'/'mod jazz' isn't jazz, but much of it is. I'm not 'so clever' as to
attempt to define what the border is, because there isn't one. Much like
soul, freakbeat/garage/Pop Art sounds things are not neccesarily one thing
or another. But I'd certainly say that the equation soul track - vocals =
jazz is both simplistic and wrong. Equally jazz + vocals = vocal jazz, not
soul . . . .

And of course 60s soul is a musical style, regardless of vocals - because
although we speak of soul, or r'n'b we almost always mean 'before 1969',
meaning a specific range of production, rhythms and vocal styles.

Next question: Is Enigma latin-jazz?
