The Allmusic Guide, http://www.allmusic.com is pretty good for this kind of
thing. I think there are a number of people here, given the time, who
could go into a fair amount of detail on this subject, but for some quick
explanations, check out these below links:
Soul music: http://allmusic.com/cg/x.dll?UID=10:30:28|AM&p=amg&sql=CSOUL
soul jazz: http://allmusic.com/cg/x.dll?UID=10:30:28|AM&p=amg&sql=CSOUL|JAZZ
more soul jazz: http://allmusic.com/cg/x.dll?UID=10:34:55|AM&p=amg&sql=C4495
Jazz: http://allmusic.com/cg/x.dll?UID=10:34:55|AM&p=amg&sql=F0JAZZ
That should get you started rather nicely. While I completely understand
and respect the notion of wanting to be able to define and more easily
recognize musical genres and styles, I definitly don't want to overlook a
point made by Matt Bolton, which is that definitions are often not as
important as feelings.

Jazz.
