Mr.Nottingham - I'd be more impressed with you post about Mr.Bailey is (a)
you used your real name, and (b) didn't nearly use someone else's name with
some intent, presumably, of landing someone no longer on the list in the
shit, and (c) didn't log on to the modslist under several different
pseudonyms and reply to messages from himself about his club to make it
sound like there's a large Nottingham contingent on the list (who only ever
post when there's a Nottingham psyche night on - using the list for
promotion? touche, turtle-neck). Anyway, I'm sure Rob saved the round-trip
train fare for his lucky punters, or air fare if they're Japanese, just as
I'm sure the guy who was selling Shake for 10 quid certainly paid nowhere
near that himself. As for why Rob (like some of the other lurking real world
mod scene characters) doesn't post except to promote his gigs/record sales,
I believe it has as much to do with the fact that there's a whole load of
people who'd disagree with any opinions he might hold about mod, or the
modness of Paul Secular's arse, on principle. If he piped back like Davy
Love every time someone slagged off the Mousetrap it would get a bit
tedious.
re: Millenium - those people getting het up about the real date/start of it
all - who cares? It doesn't mean anything (the date of New Year has changed
too over the years) and I'm sure most people know it too, but the point is
it's a party.
On to Jonathon's question - none of the regulars I know will be spending 50
quid to go to BB. It was bad enough last New Year - full of people who go to
clubs once a year and I don't want to see the people that go out once in a
thousand years. Richard (owner of BB) seems to be particularly good at
pissing off his regular punters (and the DJs). Those of us not going to
London will probably be organising our own soiree, and I'd much rather see
the new year in with friends than feeling like an (exploited) sardine.
Have to agree with Mark and Jonathon's points about over-hype though - the
eclipse this summer was meant to be a 'big event', but the various events
were so under-subscribed it drove Harvey Goldsmith out of business
(hooray!). Wonder how many of the big NYE nights will be major flops? Like
tickets for the Millenium dome, and 'low' Xmas sales for the past few years,
I wonder how long it will be before businesses start realising the public
aren't QUITE as stupid as they think?
