I used to brave the Minnesota elements wearing almost exclusively vintage
shoes, but in more recent years have chosen to wear newer Mary Janes,
oxfords, go-go boots or Adidas trainers on weekends. My main complaint with
shopping for shoes lately has been the almost total lack of plain,
practical, or remotely attractive SOLES on numerous pairs of otherwise great
shoes! Girls, (maybe guys too!) you've all been through it: spy a great
looking pair of shoes (not too contemporary or trendy looking, in the
Italian section or better) and rush over to examine it. Only to find them
attached one of three horrid things:

Those UGLY 'orthopedic' - looking mechanical rubber soles (usually these
shoes also have an unattractive curved toe box);

Huge industrial lug soles, suitable for hiking, off-road running or mountain
climbing;

Tall, square, chunky 4 or 5 inch stack heels.

While everyone is inclined to their own tastes and discretion, all I can say
about the three above trends in footwear is YUCK!!! While waiting for my
boyfriend to find the pair of desert boots he wanted at the Clarks store I
wandered over to the women's section, attracted by a smart - looking pair of
suede Mary Janes with a big button fastener only to find the DREADED
ORTHOPEDIC RUBBER SOLE. After more inspection I couldn't find a single pair
of women's shoes in the place WITHOUT them! So disappointing...as they had
quite a few pairs of women's shoes that were otherwise very sharp and well
made. I don't think many girls wear the men's desert boot very well
either. Clarks sells a lot of hippie shoes - clogs, sandals, hiking boots,
thsoe awful Treks (sorry Brian) etc. so it's not like I was really
surprised, but still..................

If anyone has practical suggestions of places to check out for good women's
shoes, excluding Prada and Payless, please share!

Miss Becky
