To comment on your inquiry regarding "northern soul" being spun at New
York City night spots. We had started our night in New York focusing
mainly on 6o's black american sounds which includes spinning a
sprinkling of "Northern" courtesy of myself and former eastcoast
resident Eugene "the greyhound" Balk. After having a few monthly nights,
the "northern" sound was gradually being removed from our sets and the
discovery of "international" soul was being introduced. These sounds
were echoing beats from Brasil, Latin America, Africa, Philippines,
India and France. These sounds that I had mentioned were becoming much
more "enjoyable" to spin not to mention packing the dancefloor of all
people of all different musical backgrounds. THAT'S what we've always
hoped we would accomplish at our own DJ night - a ridiculous amount of
people from all different musical taste backgrounds just letting go and
getting into it no matter what sub-genre it's from.

I personally still love "northern" soul but as far as deejaying it, I
would opt for more of the "heavier" funkier sound instead. I do not know
what "type" of crowd attracts "northern" in your area, but I have to say
that, it is too much of the "skinhead" contingency for me. I personally
find "northern" difficult to get people dancing when most of the
material tends to be more "treble" than "bass". I have noticed more
people getting on their feet when the groove is "deep" and "bass" heavy.

Well, since we are on this topic of New York soul nights I guess it
would be fitting to plug our night happening this Friday at Suite. The
jet club soul swingers will be hosting a night filled with "intriguing
international sounds for those on pleasure bent". Suite can be found on
Ave. A (between 5th & 6th), directly below Kim's Video. The flight takes
off at 11pm and lands 4am.
