Yes...Paul, Mod is not derived from the word modern but is in fact an
acronym for "morons on dexys" contrary to the widely held belief in the 80's
that it was "mormons on dexys". ;-) Now act like you know.

Certainly I feel fairly certain that the term 'modernist' began to be used
in this context as a reference to the 'modern jazz' taste of these new
dandies... maybe they were forward-looking in other areas - but I think it's
a misconception many people hold that mod/modernist is derived from the word
'modern' - ie. that these dudes wanted to do the 'latest' thing.  What they
wanted in fact was the most stylish music/clothes etc. Whether or not these
things were 'new' or 'modern' is slightly beside the point I think. Both
then and today.
If any historians wish to correct me on any poin - please go ahead!!
I've not done all that much reading on the subject to be honest.
