And I maintain that it's time for the next step in the development of the
'mod' look... I suggest the 'in' thing for the new millenium will be the
medieval tunic................................ lace-up, fitted waist, no
buttons, flared sleeves...

(hmmmm)

Actually I thought the modern jazz artists (Miles Davis etc.) were called
modernists. I thought the British 'modernists' were using this term since
they dag these cats - their music - but also their style - sharp suits etc.
("Knock my talent but never knock my tailor"...)

Certainly I feel fairly certain that the term 'modernist' began to be used
in this context as a reference to the 'modern jazz' taste of these new
dandies... maybe they were forward-looking in other areas - but I think it's
a misconception many people hold that mod/modernist is derived from the word
'modern' - ie. that these dudes wanted to do the 'latest' thing.
What they wanted in fact was the most stylish music/clothes etc. Whether or
not these things were 'new' or 'modern' is slightly beside the point I
think. Both then and today.
After all - the 3-button suit has been around for a long time now...! I
don't think the 60s 'space suit' style is ever going to catch on with the
mods.....................

I write this in rather a hurry - but I think you get my point. I'm sure all
this is nothing new to most of you on the list.
If any historians wish to correct me on any poin - please go ahead!!
I've not done all that much reading on the subject to be honest.

Enough ramble!
... Paul
