thank you amy! i will be spinning northern soul at this night for the next
month or so while oneof the regular dj's is away. its not a dance night,
but i urge all of you to come down and check it out... it would be really
nice to see some more mods there (assuming there are any - but there were a
bunch of responses to this thread)... this isnt meant as an arrogant plug,
but unless solid hit soul club happens anytime soon, there is NOONE else
spinning northern soul in new york city at the moment.
getting back to the issue at hand, i agree that there is really NO
authentic or traditional mod scene in new york city. sure, we have lust!,
shout! and tiswas, but i dont really consider any of these nights true
"mod" nights, as most of the attendees and promoters couldnt give a shit
about the variety of the music they spin, or what they spin at all. try
wearing a suit to ANY of these nights and stick out like a sore thumb. ask
if they will even play any fucking MOTOWN, and get strange glances.
whatever. i havent been to shout! in close to 6 months, but i cant imagine
it has improved at all... i dont mean to harsh on the promoters and dj's,
but theyre not mod nights by any stretch of the imagination.
unfortunately, it is difficult to find spots in the city to do more
traditional 60's/modernist parties. unless you can promise a large drinking
crowd, bars/pubs/clubs dont care about you. the problem is, though, that if
you pitch a mod night, theyll give you a night between monday and
wednesday. so, essentially its a catch-22. ive been trying to get DJ gigs
for a year now, and finally fell in with a swell bunch of people at the
raven. as far as music is concerned, it would seem to me that tuesday
nights at the raven is the most authentic and traditional "mod" evening
happening in the city...at least in my opinion. the only thing holding it
back is a "no dancing" rule..(thank giuliani for that one).. it would be
nice to see the shout/lust/tiswas "mods" coming down to support it, however
they never do. its certainly not the "no dancing" thing, seeing as most of
these kids never dance anyway...
i will take leave of my soapbox now. but, try to come to the raven and say
hello. ill be spinning northern this tuesday, and most others, from 10PM
until a little after 12:15. then, dj johnny metro spins more
atlantic/stax/funky 60's soul. please say hello if you do come. raven is on
the northeast corner of 12th st. and ave. A.. if you have any questions or
comments feel free to email me privately.. ive been around nyc for quite a
while and still dont really know any "mods" or "soulies", and id like to..
