Moving right along... Pennsylvania--and the
Philadelphia area in particular-- has given the world
some truly great organists.
Organ godfather Jimmy Smith comes from Norristown,
Pa., just outside of Philadelphia. And Jimmy McGriff
(an ex-Philly cop) comes from the city itself.
I'm told Charles Earland also comes from Philly but I
have yet to confirm this. Incidentally, I highly
recommend Lou Donaldson's 1969 album "Hot Dog."
Charles Earland is the organist in Donaldson's band
and, even though Donaldson is a sax player, most of
the songs are organ intensive.
Rappers Puff Daddy and Brand Nubian have sampled
heavily from this album.
