Paul Weller Arrested In Connection With Alleged Rape

Oct 23, 2000, 10:30 am PT

English pop icon Paul Weller, who gained notoriety both as the lead singer of
the Jam and the Style Council as well as through his solo efforts, has been
arrested in Farnham, England in connection with a rape which allegedly
occurred four years prior.

Weller, 42, was arrested and released on bail without charge on Monday (Oct.
23), according to the BBC. "We have received an allegation of rape which is
alleged to have happened in Farnham at the end of 1996," said a police
spokesperson, as quoted by the BBC. Not much more is known at press time, but
additional reports out of the UK said Weller is expected to be brought back
in for more questioning in the next few weeks.

Weller has long been idolized by many of Britain's contemporary musicians for
his groundbreaking work in British punk band the Jam from 1977-1982. He later
scored a minor hit in America with his next band, the Style Council ("My Ever
Changing Moods"), in 1984.

Weller recently cancelled a planned U.S. tour after the undertaking became
too expensive without tour support from an American record label (allstar,
Oct. 2).
