I had a similar problem, and Ralf recommended upgrading to Apache 1.3.3
and mod_ssl 2.0.13. I did this and it at least solved that problem for
me...

One thing I noticd about the instructions on the example site was that
it left out an important step in regards to SSLeay--make install, which
copies the appropriate binaries to /usr/local/ssl and creates the
appropriate links to create such useful utilities as s_client.
