I am really sorry to hear that.  I have been using mod_ssl for a long
time now with great results.  I have found both this list and Ralf to be
very helpfull in helping me with configuration issues and bug problems.
The thing I really like about mod_ssl is the great documentation and
clean compiling that Ralf has provided us.  I see many times on the list
where people do not follow Ralf's excellent documentation and try to
shortcut the process and get into trouble and may have a negative
experience.  

I would definetly suggest a clean static install from fresh sources of
all packages and follow Ralf's instructions to the T.  Then, after you
have confirmed that it works, apply your custom changes that are
required to the default httpd.conf file.  I believe you will end up with
a solution that works well for you.
