I installed the same package and was receiving the same errors.
On examining the error logs, I noticed that the SSL (OpenSSL 0.9.3a)
was causing segmentation faults and stopping the SSL.

When I set it up as a standalone SSL server ( no virtual hosts ) it seemed to
work fine.

Try getting the source and compiling the build for your machine, that seems
to have cured the problems in my setup here, but I will still have to do
some further work on it before I put that version online full time.

(also be sure to download the latest mod_ssl source.......)

If you find out its something else, please let me know....
