Hmmm... as long as you have "SSLOptions FakeBasicAuth" not enabled somewhere
(neither in httpd.conf nor any htaccess files) REMOTE_USER isn't manipulated
by mod_ssl in any way. So your problem seems not to be directly related to
mod_ssl. Instead I guess your SSL vhost has some other misconfiguration which
perhaps leads to this. Although I've to admit that I've currently no clue what
can cause this...
