Hello Tim,
I did this decision beacuse of the following reasons. RAR makes solid
archives, i.e. the size of the package is much smaller than that of
ZIP-Archives. This saves time for downloading. "unRAR", the decompression
utility, is free. Here is an excerpt from the license:
- The source code of unRAR utility is freeware. This means:
- ...
-
- 2. The unRAR sources may be used in any software to handle RAR
- archives without limitations free of charge, but cannot be used
- to re-create the RAR compression algorithm, which is proprietary.
- Distribution of modified unRAR sources in separate form or as a
- part of other software is permitted, provided that it is clearly
- stated in the documentation and source comments that the code may
- not be used to develop a RAR (WinRAR) compatible archiver.
- ...
If you download the archiver, you will find the source-code in this package.
It will compile for very many platforms. There are also precompiled binaries
on their website.
By the way, I also considered to use bzip2 from
http://sourceware.cygnus.com/bzip2/, which achieves even better compression
than RAR and falls under GPL. But you're right: for the next package, I will
use a GPL'ed archiver.
Yours,
CK.
