Apache 1.3.12 and mod_ssl

I am using RedHat 6.1 with the stock RPMS:

    apache-1.3.12-2.i386.rpm
    mod_ssl-2.6.3-1.i386.rpm
    openssl-0.9.5-1.i386.rpm

The problem is that after install, I can connect to the servcer though
the https://...
but NOT trough http://...

I tried addding a Virtual Host like this without any effect.

    <VirtualHost _default_:80>
    DocumentRoot /home/site
    ErrorLog logs/error_log
    TransferLog logs/access_log
    SSLEngine off
    </VirtualHost>

Am I missing something? Any clues???
