For what it's worth, I'm currently experiencing the same problem with
Netscape Communicator 4.61. Both client and server are inside our firewall,
so the firewall is not a factor.

I've run a sniffer on my client box and what I've found so far is that at
some point my server sends a FIN and then a RESET which my Netscape browser
promptly ignores and tries to continue the SSL session. (I just started
digging into this and my initial scan of the packets didn't find a SSL CLOSE
NOTIFY from the server.) The browser just sends an SSL application packet
and waits for the response that never comes. It seems to be the result a
weird race condition that I have not been able to define.

It would be interesting to see if your problem is somehow related to the
same thing.

I'm running:
HPUX 10.2
Apache 1.3.12
Mod-SSL 2.6.3
OpenSSL 0.9.4

If I don't find any thing obvious from the packet analysis, my next step was
going to be to upgrade Mod-ssl and maybe OpenSSL (although I thought I'd
read on the list that Openssl 0.9.5 and mod-ssl didn't play nice together)

Please let me know if you find out any info on your end.

Thanks,

Deb
