hi all
i figured out the problem. this may be a bug, too:
with libsafe installed, error messages from the Apache conifguration don't
get generated. literally no error messages were generated.
the problem was my OpenSSl install (from RPM's) didn't install into
/usr/local/ssl as expected, but spread their lib, include and bin dirs to
the appropriate dirs under /usr/local. hence, no openssl install was
found. installing openssl from source did the trick.
