Let's try a bit of lateral thinking...

Using your MSIE5.5 browser, can you make a connection to ANY
apache/mod_ssl site? That is, do you know for sure that MSIE5.5 actually
works with apache/mod_ssl?

Only if you are sure that the browser works should you bust a gut trying
to fix the server...
