The updated version is one that I placed there yesterday, as I was fed up of
the package not working. While I was at it I made the versions for i386,i486
and i586 available. The last one is definitely working OK, but since I don't
have a Pentium 2 running Linux (yet) I haven't tested the i686 version. I'm
99% certain it will work OK. Basically, all I had to change was a couple of
lines to ensure that any errors during install and uninstall didn't affect
the rpm database.

The install file for the latest apache-mod_ssl says it requires openssl
0.9.5a or above (although it doesn't mention that on the modssl site. Can
this be sorted?)

That's what I like about compilers. You can compile code for a machine you
don't even have!

John,

Thanks for the tips..... we have liftoff!

While I was waiting for feedback, I uninstalled openssl-0.9.6-1.i686.rpm
and reinstalled it (I use GNOME RPM), and this time I did get an error
message:

Execution of openssl-0.9.6-1 script failed, exit status 1.

(and of course, I had the same errors as before when trying to start
Apache).

Then your email came through..... so I uninstalled 0.9.6 and installed the
RPM off of the RedHat 7.0 CD: openssl-0.9.5a-14.i386.rpm

No error messages during install..... and Apache SSL now works!

I just noticed there is now an update:
http://www.modssl.org/contrib/openssl-0.9.6-1.fixed.i686.rpm

Needless to say, now that everything is working, I'm a little leary
of trying 0.9.6 again! ;-)

What do you think? Is it worth the risk?

Cheers,

Steve

How did you install the new stuff? with rpm -Uvh package-name?Did you
receive an error with openssl complaining that /usr/local/ssldoesn't exist?
If so, the package hasn't fully installed.Tryrpm -qa | grep sslto see what
you have. If openssl comes up twice, do the following toreinstall itrpm
--Uvh --oldpackage openssl-0.9.5a.i686.rpmmkdir /usr/local/sslrpm -Uvh
openssl-0.9.6-1.i686.rpmYou will of course need the previous openssl package
(probably on the Redhat7 CD).An error has been put into the spec file for
openssl 0.9.6. Once I find itI'll try to submit an update.- John
