I can assure you that it should make no difference. The only reason the non-engine version existed at 0.9.6 was to give developers more lead-time to adjusting their to the subtle API changes in the engine version. Using the engine version without specifying an engine should work just as the non-engine version as far as mod_ssl is concerned.
