Sorry to be the one to have to tell you this, but you can't mix-and-match like that. The certificate is absolutely tied to the private key, because the certificate contains the public key. So you can't use the certificate/public key unless you have the private key that goes with it. I don't know if Thawte has a "replacement" program... I think some of the CA's do. So maybe you can get a reissued certificate to go with your new private key for less than the full price.
