Perlmonks shows that a Karma system needn't go horribly wrong, but it also shows that it can't deter a troll. Kuro5hin shows that it may only barely have any appreciable effect whatsoever. Slashdot shows that it can fail spectacularly. I have yet to see any evidence that any Karma system actually achieves its stated goal.
