A word of caution about this. About a year ago, the company that we
purchased our Web site statistics package from sent us an e-mail accusing us
of running their product on more than one server.

We had previously beta tested new versions of their product for them and had
run test versions concurrent with live versions. We were sure they were
looking at historical data. They claimed that it was ongoing so we asked
them for IP addresses.

As it turns out, both of the IP addresses were bound to separate NICs in the
same Stats server...except, how do we prove it? Apparently, the requests did
not pass a machine name or anything that would identify the server beyond an
IP address.

Needless to say, they were incredulous and we were pretty upset at being
accused of outright theft by a vendor we had been with for years. We haven't
purchased anything from them since.

I think they finally looked at the frequency of the requests and realized it
was a single server. Or maybe they noticed that the requests only came from
one IP address at a time as the server switched back and forth between
network cards. I dunno.

Anyway, they quit pestering us about it. However, to my knowledge, they
never apologized.

Hi Robert,

All good comments. I should have made it clearer that I was talking about
the automatic SCA updates download (not the product itself). We're seeing
more SCA engines being downloaded then we have licences.

Regards,
