Ok, so after a few hours of testing I got it up. As it turns out it was
SELinux and also permissions on the files

Firstly for dealign with SELinux:
setsebool -P httpd_read_user_content 1
setsebool -P httpd_something_homedirs 1 <--- I can't remember exactly
(i have it written down somewhere)

After a restart and setting file permissions to 775 I can get one django
site up using the generic httpd stuff from:
https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.6/howto/deployment/wsgi/modwsgi/
Will any problems arise from changing the selinux settings?

Lastly, how do I got about running multiple django projects under one host,
I saw something about WSGIDaemonProcess, but it doesn't quite work as-is,
also I tried the VirtualHosts option but I can't get that to work either,
anybody got any ideas?
